This book contains some historic background to the process involved in producing pattern welded steel. Much of this is based on the author's experiences with replica bloomery furnaces and his experiments on the working, properties and controllability of steels, based on information from historical evidence.
The book then goes on to explain the forge welding techniques and methods used to achieve the patterned bar and then the layering required to forge a typical sword and an axe head.
It is also illustrated with photographs of historic pieces, and more unusual items made by the author.
This is a 'how to' book, which also gives much background information on the processes.
