Historic Ironwork: Architectural |
Otto Hoever starts this book with a short explanation of the development of the styles encountered in Europe during the six centuries covered. Then follows over 450 black and white photographs of mainly architectural work, set in chronological order. Each picture is accompanied by the known details of the approximate date the piece was made and its location. There are illustrations of many doors, door furniture, including knockers and locks, screens, grills, railings, gates and ironwork for the interior of religious buildings. The front cover does not convey the wealth of diverse work pictured inside. This book is a window on the wonderful work achieved by our forbears, before the availability of the the gas and electric tools we now take for granted.
